Job Overview
Aerojet Rocketdyne is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering design team in our Canoga Park, (Los Angeles area), CA facility.

This position requires mechanical design skills that will be applied in designing and solving issues in the development and integration of high pressure/power and extreme temperature Mechanical Engineering hardware; such as chemical propulsion systems along with injectors, reaction chambers, nozzles, and system integration hardware for liquid rocket engines and propulsion thrusters. Working under the guidance of senior staff and subject matter experts, the candidate will support and produce the innovative designs and design changes necessary to be used in these high pressure/power, extreme environment applications.

The selected candidate will perform mechanical design engineering assignments requiring application of advanced engineering principles, theories, and concepts to develop propulsion hardware for spacecraft and/or missile programs.

This position may be filled at this level or one level higher.

Essential Functions
30 - Develop concepts for mechanical systems to meet customer propulsion requirements. Perform preliminary design, component sizing, and propulsion hardware packaging to meet volume and mass constraints. Work mechanical solutions needed to integrate propulsion systems with vehicle and payload interfaces.

25 - Create mechanical components and their higher level systems for high pressure and extreme environment applications. Interpret engineering models and drawings and perform tolerance studies. Evaluate technical input from hardware suppliers and work with cross-functional teams on producibility improvements and cost savings. Candidate will participate in trade studies and preliminary designs using 3D CAD modeling software tools (Creo).

20 - Prepares engineering drawings with associated geometric dimensioning and tolerancing in accordance with ASME Y14.5 standards. Actively participates in team meetings to assure design content for new or modified engineering designs. May lead the work of design staff or oversee the work of product definition designers.

15 - Prepare and deliver technical presentations for internal and external customers. Responsible for preparing engineering reports to support tolerance studies, engineering analyses, or failure investigations, including technical close-out reports. May attend engineering review boards to support program level technical decision making.

5 - Participate in development and qualification testing for new product development. Creates test integration hardware to support flow testing, vibration testing and hot-fire testing. May support hands-on work during test preparation. May participate with data reduction.

5 - Perform or coordinate thermal and/or structural analysis for predicting component and system-level performance in the design of products. Interact with manufacturing engineering to assure hardware is producible.
Requirements
A Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, or an appropriate discipline, and five (5) years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • An advanced degree or coursework toward an advanced degree is a plus.
  • Requires the ability to innovate new hardware and integration of high pressure fluid systems with minimal supervision.
  • Experience with liquid and gaseous pressurized systems is desired (tanks, fluid routing, sealing devices such as o-rings and metallic seals, valves and regulators)
  • Experience with testing and qualification of mechanical hardware is beneficial.
  • Working knowledge of Creo or Solidworks CAD geometry-based modeling is desired. Experience using the Windchill product lifecycle management system is desired.
  • Experience in the design and development of mechanical systems and working knowledge of ASME Y14.5 is required.
  • Strong mechanical engineering background with knowledge and understanding of fluid flow principles.
  • Experience with aerospace hardware is beneficial.
  • General component and system level knowledge of chemical rocket propulsion hardware is desirable.
  • General understanding of manufacturing processes (machining, welding, brazing, heat treating) is required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required.

May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level. Requires U.S. Citizenship. Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
Employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit or stand and maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 25 pounds; may require occasional walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. May require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
Pay range for this position:83,000 - 123,000 per year
