EAA News: ECi Introduces 180 hp Four Cylinder Engine -- the TITAN 340 Stroker

Engine Components International (ECi) of San Antonio, TX, one of the oldest and largest manufacturers of piston aircraft engine parts for Lycoming and Continental, announces a complete new engine, the 180 hp TITAN 340 Stroker. The engine has the size and weight of a 320 with the power of a 360.

The 340 STC engine is a direct replacement for the 150, 10 or 180 hp Lycoming. The engine has flown for several years with thousands of flight hours in experimental aircraft. Final approval for the engine STC was received May 1, 2013 from the Chicago Special Certification office.

One of the 340 Stroker engines has been installed in a Cessna 172, replacing a Lycoming O-320 10 hp engine. Flight testing has been started in the 172 equipped with a Stroker engine and a Hartzell constant speed propeller. Texas Skyways (www.txskyways.com) is presently pursuing the airframe STC for the Cessna 172 series aircraft and later will develop installation data for Piper airframes.

The constant speed propeller may weigh more and cost more, but it performs better than a fixed pitch. However, if customers prefer a fixed pitch, that is also available. Final flight testing will help customers decide. The constant speed propeller offers the advantage of maximum RPM for maximum horsepower at takeoff and a more efficient 2400 RPM for cruise. At 2400 RPM, maximum torque is developed. This means more pitch in the propeller for more thrust, thus allowing customers to travel faster.

The 340 Stroker fits the cowling, baffles, engine mount and exhaust just like a Lycoming 320. It will be available with a carburetor or fuel injection, magnetos or electronic ignition and TITAN Nickel cylinders. The recommended TBO for the 340 Stroker is 2000 hours.
