WWII Heritage Days Ready for Biggest Year of Displays

The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Dixie Wing is providing a variety of new experiences with historic aircraft, parachute jumping, an Army band, and a dome theatre when it hosts World War II Heritage Days, April 27-28, 2019, at Atlanta Regional Airport (Falcon Field) in Peachtree City. The weekend event will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion in Europe, including a rare display of three C-47 transport planes that actually participated in the invasion.

This year, guests will be directed to parking at the nearby Eaton Corporation lot on Highway 74, with shuttle buses to the event site at the Dixie Wing Warbird Museum. On-site parking will be provided for WWII veterans, with designated areas for golf carts and handicapped guests. Fees (cash only) are $20 per car in the parking area and $5 per person for golf carts and motorcycles.

WWII Heritage Days is the largest annual 1940s-theme event in Georgia. Throughout the weekend, more than 500 volunteers will conduct special events such as Allied and Axis troops in reenactment battles, 1940s music shows, veteran and historian presentations, education displays and activities for children. WWII veterans will be honored throughout the weekend. Saturday evening, the romance and glamor of the Big Band Era will return with “Keep ‘Em Flying”, a 1940s-theme hangar dance featuring a live 20-piece swing band, the Peachtree Jazz Edition. The U.S. Army Maneuver Center of Excellence Band (MCoE Band)) from Fort Benning, GA, will perform big band music at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Dixie Wing will recreate the 1940s era with displays of historic aircraft, military vehicles, antique cars and vintage fashion. Three D-Day veteran C-47 SkyTrain transports will be on display, and a Liberty Jump Team performance will replicate the parachute drops of D-Day. Rides on vintage Dixie Wing aircraft will be offered throughout the weekend. The Wing also will feature a dome theater presenting “Rise Above”, the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, and another “Rise Above” exhibit will highlight the Women Airforce Service Pilot (WASP) program, including an authentic WASP training aircraft.
