On Dec. 26, 2012, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) finally withdrew its faulty legal interpretation of the maintenance personnel duty time limitations prescribed in Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) section 121.377. Although the correction took longer than expected, the end result was a major victory for the aviation industry, and a perfect illustration of the value in actively engaging the FAA when it veers from its own regulations.

If you hold a mechanic certificate or any other airman or medical certificate for that matter, the FAA has personal information about you. Depending upon how many certificates and ratings you hold, or if you have been involved in any type of incident, accident or enforcement proceeding, the FAA could have a significant amount of your personal information. The question many people ask is, “If asked, what will the FAA tell someone about me?” The answer to that question will depend upon who is asking the FAA for the information and how the FAA is being asked.

Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, has been awarded an $83.7 million contract for engines to power 19 V-22 aircraft operated by the US Marine Corps and Air Force. The contract, a modification of a prior agreement, includes a total of 38 Rolls-Royce AE 1107C engines manufactured in Indianapolis, Indiana. The contract was awarded through the Naval Air Systems Command in Patuxent River, Maryland.

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp.’s G280 aircraft has received type certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). The certification recognizes that the super mid-sized aircraft demonstrates compliance with EASA airworthiness and environmental requirements. It is one of the final steps required for the G280 to be registered in a European Union country.

As I write this column, it is two weeks after the Super Bowl. These days, the Super Bowl isn’t just a football game to decide the NFL championship.
