Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. recently announces it has expanded its worldwide service and support network by opening a parts and materials distribution center near Los Angeles. The 5,000-square-foot/464.5-square-meter facility at Van Nuys Airport primarily serves Gulfstream customers in the western U.S. and Canada, shortening delivery times and minimizing shipping costs.

There are no easy jobs in aviation maintenance — all take a tremendous amount of knowledge and fortitude. However, persons that have “quality” in their titles can have the toughest roles. Somehow, the title of director of quality or manager of quality assurance gives the impression that only those individuals are responsible for ensuring proper work is or has been done. Nothing could be further from the truth; every individual and company is responsible for ensuring compliance.

In regards to the recent ANRPM on drug and alcohol testing, ARSA released the following announcement.
On March 17, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) to collect information to draft regulations regarding controlled substance and alcohol testing of part 145 repair station employees located outside the United States.
This development was initially reported by the Aeronautical Repair Station Association (ARSA) when the FAA announced that it would seek comments to the ANPRM on March 13.

On May 29, the House Ways and Means Committee approved H.R. 4718, legislation to make permanent the immediate expensing of 50% of new investments in equipment and software. NATA joined other major associations including the National Association of Manufacturers and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in support of the legislation.

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) Foundation will award 11 scholarships in 2014 to help support outstanding student pilots. Ten of the scholarships will provide $5,000 each and an eleventh scholarship will award $12,000 to student pilots pursuing an FAA sport, recreational or private pilot certificate.

AAR’s Nordisk Aviation Products announces it has received orders for more than 1,100 lightweight air cargo containers and pallets from China Southern Airlines. Nordisk’s Unit Load Devices (ULDs), among the lightest-weight in the industry, will provide the airline fuel savings of more than 1,100 tons of fuel a year, reducing carbon emissions by more than 3,500 tons. The containers and pallets will be manufactured at Nordisk’s facility in Kunshan, China, for shorter delivery lead times to the customer.

The topic of drug and alcohol testing has been at the forefront of discussions since the FAA published its Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) titled “Drug and Alcohol Testing of Certain Maintenance Provider Employees Located Outside the United States” in the Federal Register on March 17. The FAA wanted to get feedback from the industry on the ramifications of expanding drug and alcohol testing requirements to foreign repair stations. The deadline for comments was originally May 16, but on May 1, the FAA announced that the deadline for comments had been extended to July 17.
