In the United States, we have a federal system based on the principle of checks and balances.  Each branch (legislative, executive and judicial) has separation of powers, ensuring none exceeds its constitutionally granted authority. Consequently, the legislative branch (Congress) passes laws which are enforced by the executive branch (the president and the expansive bureaucracy) and interpreted by the judicial branch (the courts, including the Supreme Court).

The first time I picked up a standard aircraft handbook in 1989, I was instantly amazed at the standardized aircraft hardware markings and predetermined set of part numbers that were understood by almost everyone in the aviation maintenance community. I recall studying materials and rivets in FAA Advisory Circular AC43-13, thinking that the aircraft hardware system was pretty fool proof. I could see no reason why anyone would want to alter something that had worked so well for several decades.

These days, it isn’t uncommon for a company with an air carrier certificate for conducting Part 135 operations to also hold a Part 145 repair station certificate. In this situation, the company’s repair station business performs maintenance on both the aircraft operated by the air carrier as well as other aircraft.  For smaller businesses, it isn’t unusual for the company to employ individuals who hold both an airman certificate and a mechanic certificate.

Today, more than ever, aviation is evolving into a global business. Our front-line sales and customer service representatives may often be the very first people that foreign visitors to our country interact with. Or we may be the first visitor from our company in the customer’s home land. These perceptions and greetings may form lasting impressions to the visitors and hosting personnel. It is important that aviation representatives are trained in the basics of international etiquette and understanding of foreign cultures.

The CJ3 is categorized as a light business jet and is in its ninth year of service. East Alton, IL - West Star Aviation announces that it has completed the first-ever installation of Rockwell Collins’ Skybox in a Gulfstream G550. The installation was completed at West Star’s East Alton (ALN) location and was delivered on time at the beginning of March 2013.  The Skybox enables users to take full advantage of an onboard Apple iTunes library to share movies, TV shows and music wirelessly and on demand. West Star installed the Skybox AMSU-5100, the larger capacity of the two available units, into the Gulfstream G550.

Washington, D.C. – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) today approved the Boeing Commercial Airplane Company's certification plan for the redesigned 787 battery system, after thoroughly reviewing Boeing’s proposed modifications and the company’s plan to demonstrate that the system will meet FAA requirements. The certification plan is the first step in the process to evaluate the 787’s return to flight and requires Boeing to conduct extensive testing and analysis to demonstrate compliance with the applicable safety regulations and special conditions.
