Know Thy Aircraft
The realtors’ axiom “Location! Location! Location!” is the iconic slogan of the number one priority in selecting and purchasing property. How often do those who identify themselves as aviation maintenance professionals follow a like priority in maintaining aircraft at their organizations, such as “Know your aircraft!”? “Knowing” the aircraft means more than just having the maintenance manual reference open for any roaming FAA safety inspectors lurking about.

As the DOM for a 135 operator, how many times has one of your aircraft flown overseas and had “unscheduled” maintenance required or a discrepancy not discovered prior to departure to a destination? I’m sure you’re counting quite a bit and thinking, Gulfstream or Bombardier, or even Dassault Falcon service centers took care of the discrepancies in France, England, Germany, etc. You assured the return to service was correct and even gave the service center a one-time RII approval.

This is the second portion of a two-part article on aviation industry standards. The first article discussed the need for standards and how they emerge. This portion will cover one of the most widely-used international industry standards: the ATA spec family of aviation standards (and ATA Spec 2000 in particular). There are many more industry standards, but from an aftermarket point of view, ATA Spec 2000 is one of the key means of transacting aircraft parts-related business. This is why I chose to explore this particular set of standards further.

Is your company stuck in the 19th or early-20th century “find me a victim” scenario? Did you drink the Kool Aid and get sucked into the “no fault, gather around the camp fire, pound a drum and chant” syndrome? Did you eventually snap out of your delusion only to revert to finding victims? “Spare the rod, spoil the child,” is still valid but it has to done judiciously. Punishment for the sake of punishing is sadistic and counterproductive.

Primm, executive vice president of aircraft technical support for Million Air at Houston’s Hobby Airport in Texas, recalls that when he got his start in what was to become a full-blown career in avionics, he didn’t know what the word meant.
