Without flinching, PWI’s Man Van Tran gingerly holds a fluorescent-light cylinder to a blue glowing flame. His fingers numb to the heat, he steadily blows air through a plastic tube on one end, guiding its shape. In his hand, the tube bends to his will as thousands of other fluorescent lights have done since he first started with PWI back in 1983.

Aircraft mechanics have been known to solve problems. This goes back to Charles Taylor — the father of aircraft maintenance. Taylor designed and built the engine that powered the Wright Flyer into the history books (when engine manufacturers of the time said they couldn't do it). I've seen mechanics make turnbuckle wrenches to make cable rigging easier and faster.

CASA 212 with Hartzell 5-Blade Propellers

Airplane modifier Texas Turbine Conversions receives a supplemental type certificate (STC) from the FAA for Hartzell Propeller's high-performance five-blade structural-composite swept propellers for CASA 212 short-takeoff-and-landing utility aircraft.

Tailwind Technologies acquires Aerospace Welding Minneapolis, Inc. and Aerospace Manufacturing, Inc. (AMI), both headed by president Tom Heid, who will continue in that capacity for Tailwind. Tailwind Technologies is the parent company of Hartzell Propeller, Inc. and Hartzell Engine Technologies LLC.

Embraer expands Clay Lacy Aviation’s Service Center Authorization to include Legacy and Praetor business jets. The company’s FAA Part 145 Repair Station at Van Nuys Airport (KVNY) now provides factory-trained maintenance, repair and overhaul services for Embraer Legacy 450, 500, 600, 650 models; Praetor 500 and 600 jets; and Phenom 100 and 300 aircraft.

EMB505 operators may now install higher-capacity Concorde batteries in the Phenom 300 with FAA-approved STC SA00959DE and EASA ESTC 10072168 Rev. 1. These new STCs provide for an option between an RG-390E 28Ah or RG-390E/30 30Ah auxiliary battery and an RG-380E/44 42Ah, RG-380E/60L 48Ah or RG-380E/53L 53Ah main starting battery, permitting operators the option to cater battery capacities to unique operational requirements for optimized performance.

Gulfstream G350 and G450 operators now have a second battery option available by using Concorde STC ST00890DE. The FAA STC approves installation of Concorde’s Platinum Series® RG-380E/46L sealed lead-acid batteries in place of original equipment lead-acid batteries.

Concorde Battery Corporation presents FAA STC SA00944DE for installation of higher-capacity sealed lead-acid batteries, the RG-380E/60L (24V, 48Ah) or RG-380E/53L (24V, 53Ah), in place of the original equipment lead-acid or nickel-cadmium battery on Textron Aviation’s 525C.
