Greg Napert and I recently flew down to West Star Aviation in East Alton, IL to celebrate the grand opening of Hangar 67 — West Star’s newest hangar. The hangar has been specifically designed to accommodate Gulfstream aircraft, and the company kept mechanics in mind throughout the design/build process.
Teams from around the world will be arriving next month in Chicago for the premier event in aviation maintenance. The competition presented by Snap-On runs in cooperation with MRO Americas offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity for aircraft maintenance technicians to showcase their skills and compete for prizes, including the William F. “Bill” O’Brien award for excellence in aircraft maintenance.

Last November 5, the FAA issued Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) 2010-1060, “Policy Clarifying Definition of Actively Engaged for Purposes of Inspector Authorization.” The original deadline for comments was December 6, but the FAA extended the comment deadline to January 17. Either deadline was too early for a call to action in this column, but I wanted to make some comments on the NPRM, Inspection Authorization, and advanced certification.
It’s been really burning me up lately to watch as the media tears apart companies for purchasing business jets.
A real shortfall of recent attempts at economic stimulus is the lack of ability of Washington to recognize that it’s encouraging the purchase of goods that stimulates the economy. It’s not any more complicated than that.
