West Star Aviation is now offering interior services at its Columbia, SC (CAE) location. The new interior shop is fully equipped to complete a variety of partial interior work, including upholstery, panel recovery and carpet. West Star does not currently offer woodworking services at CAE; however, it has an aggressive plan to add additional capabilities and staff members in the near future.

A reproduction of the airplane that flew the world’s first scheduled airline service will be on prominent display in the Vintage area at AirVenture Oshkosh 2013. The Benoist (pronounced BEN-wah) Type XIV is a biplane flying boat being recreated for the Duluth Aviation Institute in Hangar 10 at Duluth, Minnesota’s Sky Harbor Airport.

I was in California on May 24th this  year visiting clients. May 24th, as most of us should know, is National AMT Day — which is also the father of aviation maintenance, Charles Taylor’s birthday. Charles Taylor was the Wright Brothers’ mechanic. Charles Taylor happens to be buried in Burbank, CA at an aviation shrine called the Portal of the Folded Wings.

My high school teacher spoke in the 1980s about how important international business was to America’s growth. As the 1990s rolled around, many of the news networks and trade publications spoke of emerging markets in Asia and South America. Commentators threw around phrases like “global markets” as if doing business overseas was something new.

A mechanic who holds an inspection authorization (IA) recently asked me whether he could perform inspections both at his home base here in Minnesota and at his home in Arizona where he escapes the Minnesota winters. The mechanic knew that the IA issued by the FAA does not contain any specific geographic limitations and, as a result, the mechanic thought the answer to the question should be “anywhere in the U.S.” Well, the mechanic was right — sort of.

The aviation industry has done much over the past 35 years to improve efficiencies and lower emissions. But the general public and even the industry itself aren’t fully aware of all those efforts and the tremendous benefits they’ve garnered. The Lindbergh Foundation hopes to change that through its Aviation Green Alliance.

The common understanding in the U.S. aviation maintenance industry is that a mechanic faces penalties as an individual for work he or she performed while directly employed by a certificated entity, such as a repair station or air carrier. After all, there is plenty of precedential history showing that to be the case.
