I was fortunate to go on a backpacking trip over the New Years break. I went on a five-day hike in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park along 35 miles of the Appalachian Trail with my brother and some friends.

Steve Slade says that for as long as he can remember, he has always been interested in aviation. He flew remote-controlled airplanes as a kid. Slade says his mother has a picture of him and his grandfather when he was three years old. In the picture, Slade is pointing to the sky. One day, he asked his mother what he was pointing to. “An airplane,” she told him. This is Slade’s story.

You spend hours poring over a change to Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR), then drafting, reviewing and finally submitting comments only to have the agency blow you off. Alternatively, you don’t pay any attention to proposed rule changes; someone clues you in later instead. It seems like either way you end up with the same outcome, so why bother putting the time, effort and resources into commenting?

If you work for or operate an FBO or flight school that offers aircraft rental as well as flight instruction, whether Part 61 or 141, you know the timing for completing aircraft inspections can be confusing. I’m not talking about the annual inspection that must be conducted on all aircraft every 12 calendar months or sooner pursuant to 14 C.F.R. 91.409(a). That requirement isn’t particularly confusing. Rather, it is the 100-hour inspection under 14 C.F.R. 91.409(b) and its timing and limitations that are sometimes misunderstood.

Head down the main entrance drive of Duncan Aviation’s Lincoln, Nebraska, facility and you’ll see a Learjet 35 set atop a 20-foot stand, slightly tilted, as if frozen in time during takeoff.
The company jet flew for nearly 13,000 hours and boasted more than 10,000 landings at the time of its retirement in 2009. Though Duncan Aviation team members sold the aircraft’s engines and all salvageable parts, they kept the shell of the aircraft intact for years before it made its shift to sculpture along the main entrance drive of Duncan Aviation’s Lincoln, NE facility.
