Taking off into the New Year, the EADS group has been rebranded as “Airbus Group.” Uniting all its activities under a single and strong brand, Airbus Group also renames two of its three Divisions. Going forward, the Group is home to: • Airbus, focusing on commercial aircraft activities; • Airbus Defense and Space, integrating the Group’s defense and space activities from Cassidian, Astrium, and Airbus Military; • Airbus Helicopters, comprising all commercial and military helicopter activities.

Shell announces it has become the first major oil company to develop a lead-free replacement for Aviation Gasoline (Avgas 100 and 100LL), and will now begin a strict regulatory approvals process. Avgas is one of the last common transportation fuels to contain lead and is used by light aircraft and helicopters. Shell’s new lead-free formulation comes after 10 years of exhaustive R&D, as well as successful initial testing, carried out in the last two months by two original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) President and CEO Ed Bolen paid tribute to general aviation (GA) community legend Russell W. Meyer at a ceremony on January 25, hosted by the Wichita Aero Club, to honor Meyer’s nearly 50-year legacy of championing the industry’s interests. During the event, the organization awarded Meyer its fourth annual Wichita Aero Club Trophy.

Complacency has been identified as one of the top causes for safety issues and quality escapes. Since we recognize that, why does it remain the top of the list? For one thing, we “accidentally on purpose” keep it there because we are complacent on complacency. I will describe the psychological reasons for this phenomenon. It will be counter-intuitive and run in the face of traditional lines of thinking. First is a statement of clarity: complacency is not a cause.

Cessna Aircraft Company, a Textron Inc. (NYSE:TXT) company, is today celebrating the first deliveries of the Citation M2 light jet following Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) type certification. Brad Thress, Cessna senior vice president of business jets, says: “Cessna is once more redefining the light jet segment with the Citation M2. We’re proud to get the M2 into the marketplace and see the aircraft begin to set the standard for the next generation of business aviation.”

Cessna Aircraft Company, a Textron Inc. (NYSE:TXT) company, this month is commemorating the 20th anniversary of its Greensboro Citation Service Center. The facility, located at Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, N.C., is one of the busiest in the network of company-owned service centers, and this year alone handled approximately 2,500 service orders for aircraft operating in or traveling through the mid-Atlantic United States.

In the aftermath of the latest fatal Boeing 737 crash in Kazan, the pressing air safety-related issues have once again become the focus of discussions in the boardrooms of carriers and regulative institutions across Russia and the entire CIS. The most frequent culprits named in the case of the crash claiming all 50 lives on-board included the age of the aircraft as well as poor pilot training and technical maintenance standards.
