Avionics & Systems Integration Group (ASIG, LLC), Shadin Avionics, and SpatiOS, a consortium leading the implementation of integrated iPad solutions, jointly announced today the issuance of FAA AML-STC#ST11156SC for the flyTab iPad EFB in Part 25 aircraft. The STC authorizes the installation of a Dual flyTab Class 2 iPad EFB in any Part 25 aircraft, according to an approved model list (AML) which is maintained by the Avionics & Systems Integration Group.

The director of maintenance for a business aircraft owner is not a job or title recognized by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Part 91 operations do not require such a position and yet companies require the work; it is an unenviable job and not for the faint of heart.

PremiAir Aviation International Ltd, U.K., announces that it has entered into a transatlantic joint venture with Aviation Specialties Unlimited, Inc., (ASU) of Boise, ID to bring innovative new night vision technologies to the U.K. and other European countries.  Under the terms of the joint venture – which was signed at the recent Helicopter Association International annual HELI-EXPO in Anaheim, CA - PremiAir and ASU will jointly supply, sell and support night vision products, maintenance, training and aircraft modification services in the U.K. and Continental Europe.

For those who might not know, I don’t have a degree in English or Journalism. I am an A&P. I also had my Inspection Authorization until two years ago when the FAA clarified “actively engaged.” Unfortunately, writing about aviation maintenance management doesn’t meet the FAA’s definition of actively engaged – to “inspect, overhaul, repair, preserve, or replace parts on aircraft, or supervise (i.e., direct and inspect) those activities.”

Navhouse Corporation announces that it has acquired all of Sabena Technics’ inertial test equipment located at its avionics maintenance base at the Brussels National Airport. This purchase includes a complete IRU ASTS, IRU STS, LTN-92 INU test station, a LTN-72 test station and considerable Level III test equipment. It will be re-located to Navhouse headquarters in Bolton, Ontario.

Best Fly Maintenance announces that it will open a new part 145 Line Station at Luanda International Airport in the fourth quarter of 2014 to offer high quality maintenance services. The new station will offer line maintenance tasks, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance checks for Gulfstream G450/550, Falcon 900, Falcon 7x or Beechcraft King Air family aircraft types. Overall, Best Fly will be qualified to work on more than 30 aircraft types.

Every year, we like to profile an avionics manager for the D.O.M. magazine issue that we take to the Aircraft Electronics Association (AEA) trade show and convention. I find it interesting to interview avionics professionals and learn about the paths they took in their avionics careers. This month, we interviewed Mark Wilken, director of avionics sales for Moline, IL-based Elliott Aviation. This is Wilken’s story.

I am currently participating in a weight loss competition. This is a free competition put on by our community. Teams of four to six individuals are competing against other teams to see who can lose the most weight in three months. There are monetary prizes for the highest percentage of body weight lost for the top individuals and teams. I am in a team with my wife, son, and three other friends.

In a landmark decision on February 13, a U.S. District Court judge sided with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in a motion to dismiss a federal lawsuit brought by the City of Santa Monica over the future of Santa Monica Municipal Airport.
