When it came time to chose the recipient of D.O.M. magazine’s inaugural Above and Beyond Award, one name quickly rose to the surface. We are proud to announce that Ken MacTiernan has received our 2012 Above and Beyond Award. A plaque was presented to MacTiernan. He will also receive a BK6000 digital borescope that was generously donated by Snap-on Industrial.

The step change is happening in the air transport industry in regards to data communications, Internet technologies being introduced and increased use of software and COTS-based system, which is creating massive opportunities for those new to the industry. Unfortunately, some of these opportunities are for those with less-than-savory goals.

Today, as I sit down to start to write my editorial column for this issue, I can’t help but remember. I don’t have to tell you what day today is. The events that took place 11 years ago today are forever etched in my memory. I can remember that day vividly as if it were yesterday. I had just arrived at the office, and some coworkers told me that an airplane had hit one of the World Trade Center towers. Some images were being posted online and the hole in the tower looked like a small plane had hit it. My first thoughts were, “Why would a pilot be flying there?

Fort Worth, Texas - JSfirm.com manager Jeff Richards reports a record-setting second quarter. "There was a 61-percent increase in the number of aviation jobs being advertised on JSfirm.com during April, May and June of this year, compared to the same period in 2011," says Richards. "In fact, this was the busiest second quarter for job advertisements in our 13-year history. The two main reasons are the recovering economy and hiring companies are coming back to niche aviation sites from expensive 'cost-per-click' sites.

Bethpage, N.Y. - TE Connectivity announces the new RT-555 high-temperature heat shrink tape for commercial aerospace, military and offshore drilling applications. The bi-layer, side-entry, heat-recoverable sealing product shrinks a predetermined percentage upon the application of heat in excess of 428 degrees. Designed to be installed on mounted harnesses and suitable for use in wire harness systems requiring aggressive fluid and high-temperature resistance, the two-layer tape is designed to withstand the high temperatures generally associated with aircraft engines.

The FAA has named Baker Aviation’s maintenance facility at Addison Airport (KADS) a certified repair station. Baker Aviation is currently the only certified repair station at KADS. “We are excited about the certification and what it means for our customers,” says Marty Dryer, director of operations. “This was the next big step in our expansion with our plans to offer full-service maintenance operations to our current customers, as well as any aircraft owners or operators who choose Baker Aviation for their aircraft needs.”

Duncan Aviation has named Tony Desmond team leader of its Long Island, N.Y., business aircraft AOG engine rapid response team (RRT) located at the Republic Airport. Desmond has 22 years of aviation experience, most recently managing maintenance for five business aircraft as the owner of NexGen Aircraft Management and as chief inspector with Executive Jet Management for seven years.

I recently attended EAA’s annual AirVenture airshow in Oshkosh, Wis. I have been attending that show for more than 20 years. I attend as a part of my job — to meet and visit with clients that advertise or have the potential of advertising, to meet with readers that may be at the show and to keep up with news and changes that are taking place in the industry.

Jet Aviation St. Louis has enhanced its mobile maintenance capability with the recent addition of three customized service vehicles. The vehicles are staffed by technicians from St. Louis and will be dispatched as needed to support customers. With the addition of the latest vehicles, Jet Aviation now has five trucks available in the U.S. to deploy to assist customers (three in St. Louis and one each in Teterboro and Boston/Bedford). The trucks provide on-site maintenance services for AOG situations including non-destructive testing and engine and avionics troubleshooting.

International Communications Group (ICG) announces its receipt of two STCs from the FAA for its ePhone cordless cabin telephone system. Working with Chicago Jet Group, ICG completed the first STC on a Falcon 900 aircraft and also collaborated with L2 Consulting Services Inc. to complete the requirements for a second STC for the installation of the digital-enhanced cordless telephone (DECTtm) device on a Boeing 737-800 operated by a major U.S.-based airline.
