One of the most frustrating aspects of working “Inside the Beltway” is watching the government’s bureaucratic machine do so little. Too often the few things that move within Congress or by the administration are politically driven; they are not economically sound nor do they ensure safety.

Iknow that in past columns we have talked about FAA legal enforcement actions in which the FAA has suspended or revoked a mechanic’s certificate or the certificate of an air carrier or repair station, or has assessed a civil penalty against the certificate holder. In those situations, the FAA believed the regulatory violations committed by the certificate holders warranted the “pound of flesh” the FAA extracted with suspension or revocation of the offending party’s certificate(s) or the assessed civil penalty.

“The great thing about live bait is that it’s alive, so it wriggles on the hook and tempts fish with its movement. The bad thing about live bait is also that it’s alive, and leaving the lid of the container loose or off is a great way to lose your bait. Given the opportunity to exit, worms will often either escape or just generally make it difficult to get them all back in the can and replace the lid. Once you’ve opened a can of them, you’ve got a problem on your hands.”  — Mentalfloss.com

I was recently at a conclave of top maintenance managers from across the country and I was shocked to hear how some of us, that is “we the industry,” have chosen to respond to what I consider one of the biggest blunders of regulatory interpretation that has occurred since I got started in the industry back in the late 1980s. Geez, I’m getting old.
