Directors of maintenance in a corporate aviation setting face unique issues when it comes to determining what maintenance or alteration activity should be accomplished by contract. Most operators of business aircraft “fleets” hire individuals who hold mechanic certificates with airframe and powerplant ratings and inspection authorization; they also hold a repair station certificate with limited ratings. This arrangement provides the most options for performing the maintenance needed to ensure the highest aircraft utilization.

Why is “aircraft maintenance” a dirty phrase in an organization? Why does quality get such a bad rap? If you can consciously admit that those two questions are truthful, then it should come as no surprise that “quality aircraft maintenance” is an obscure and alien term.

Nearly five weeks ago, I decided it was time to replace my kitchen cabinets. I went shopping for some units that I could purchase and install myself, but after a day of shopping, I wasn’t pleased with the quality of the cabinets I could get for the money I was willing to spend. I decided to build them myself.
My plan was to spend the a long weekend constructing the cabinets and to have them ready to install early the following week.

In my previous article, we discussed whether aerospace-focused startups can help revive the economy, and identified potential niches that are growing. The answer seems to be a resounding ‘yes’. New technology companies that address various niches with aerospace/aviation/travel have been identified in Table One. This list is certainly not exhaustive (it was kept to only 50 companies for the sake of brevity), and we undoubtedly missed some deserving firms that should have been included. There are several ways I choose people to profile in our magazine. Sometimes I get a lead from one of our advertisers who deals with a lot of directors of maintenance. Sometimes I meet at maintenance manager at a trade show or event and realize they would make a good cover story. Sometimes I get a recommendation from a co-worker or employee.

Cessna Aircraft Company, a Textron Inc. company, is celebrating the successful completion of the wing mate on the Citation Latitude first test article. This achievement is another program milestone for the Latitude as it approaches its first prototype flight expected in the first quarter of 2014. The Latitude was announced at the National Business Aviation Association’s Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (NBAA) in October 2011.
