Aspen Avionics announces that the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has expanded the European Technical Standard Order (ETSO) authorization for Aspen’s Evolution Flight Display to include additional system components previously approved by the FAA. This latest EASA approval expands the ETSO authorization to include the Aspen Evolution 1500, 2000, and 2500 systems. These systems include both Primary Flight Display and Multi-function Flight Display capabilities developed for CS-23 fixed-wing aircraft up to 5700 kg, and for CS-27 VFR helicopter applications.

In no other occupation is there a requirement to be actively engaged, I feel it is wrong to have the requirement on aircraft technicians with an inspection authorization and quite possibly could be challenged in court, when compared to other safety sensitive occupations.

Employee selection is the choosing of one individual in preference over others on the basis of characteristics that the employer believes an employee should have in order to be successful in a specific job. The key question is: can a candidate’s suitability for a job be forecasted? If available techniques cannot produce an accurate evaluation of a candidate that possesses the desired characteristics, then management is handicapped in achieving its objective to pick the applicant who is best qualified for the job.

Giving your employees a timely, accurate evaluation is an important part of being a manager. Granted, with most managers, myself included, doing evals isn’t one their most favorite things to do. Still, they are a necessary evil. It is a necessity in order to tell your employees “where they stand” and how they can improve.

What is on-the-job training (OJT,) and what differentiates it from other forms of maintenance coursework like formal aircraft maintenance initial coursework? The primary difference between OJT and other methods of training is the hands-on practice, while most other methods rely on a theoretical approach. This is not to say these other methods are impractical. They can be, but OJT is definitely “where the tire meets the runway.”

JDA Aviation Technology Solutions (JDA) and Northwest Data Solutions (NWDS) announce a partnership to provide a full suite of Safety Management Systems (SMS) for air carriers, airports and maintenance repair overhaul (MRO) organizations, in advance of pending FAA regulations that will mandate such SMS systems. The JDA/NWDS team will allow all aviation operators, especially those with limited safety staff and resources, to take advantage of outsourced SMS services provided by JDA and NWDS, including a Virtual Safety Office (VSO) and Safety Analyst Mentor (SAM) service.
