Western Aircraft, a Greenwich AeroGroup company, announces that it has received a 2011 Boeing Performance Excellence Award. The Boeing Company issues the award annually to recognize suppliers who have achieved superior performance. Western Aircraft maintained a Silver composite performance rating for each month of the 12-month performance period, from Oct. 1, 2010, to Sept. 30, 2011.

Hawker Beechcraft Global Customer Support (GCS) announces its factory-owned service centers in the United States have, once again, received the coveted Diamond Award from the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Maintenance Technician Program. The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has certified the FastFin® Tail Rotor Enhancement and Stability System for installation and flight on Bell 205 helicopters. Following up on the successful FastFin certification for Bell 212s, European operators can now realize the same performance improvements on Bell 205s. As you may know, the FAA publishes Advisory Circular 00-46 to provide guidance for taking advantage of the Aviation Safety Reporting Program (ASRP). Under the ASRP, if an individual holding a mechanic or other airman certificate files an ASRP form or “report” (also somewhat inappropriately referred to as the “NASA form” since NASA is only the administrator of the ASRP) within the time required, any sanction that may be imposed by the FAA in a subsequent enforcement action arising from the conduct identified in the ASRP report can be waived.

As I thought about how to write an article on technology obsolescence, and the possible tangents that it could take, I decided to focus on products that relate to computer-based or communications-based technologies. Otherwise, this would be a long article. In the interests of keeping this to a readable length, and making it sufficiently interesting, I have chosen to highlight 10 possible sets of products/mechanisms that will either not exist in their present form, or face dramatic change by the year 2020.

I started my career as a field service representative (FSR) at the age of 23 with Aerospatiale Helicopter Corporation. Now, at the age of 53, as I look back at having served with several OEMs in customer support and working both sides of the fence, I thought this might be a good subject matter.

In our professions, we are continuously surrounded by maintenance records like manual revisions, bulletins and alerts, discrepancies and the paperwork required to return an aircraft to service. The paper trail never ends. While safety the overall reason for all this paperwork, compliance is our goal.
