Savannah, Ga. - Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. recently named Pedro Mercado a national sales manager for product support interior refurbishment sales. Mercado’s territory is the Eastern Seaboard of the United States, from South Carolina to Maine. He reports to Matthew Duntz, director, product support interior refurbishment sales.

Dallas - Baker Aviation Maintenance LLC (Baker) announces its purchase of AeroMech LLC. As part of the agreement, Baker will now operate at two locations: Meacham International Airport (KFTW) in Forth Worth, TX, and Addison Airport (ADS), in Dallas. The purchase was finalized late 2011. Baker will retain all AeroMech employees.

Hawker Beechcraft Global Customer Support (GCS) announces its factory-owned service centers in the United States have, once again, received the coveted Diamond Award from the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Maintenance Technician Program. The eight HBS maintenance centers including Little Rock, AR, Tampa, FL, Atlanta, GA, Indianapolis, IN, Wichita, KS, Houston, TX, San Antonio, TX and Mesa, AZ, met the requirements for the FAA’s highest distinction for excellence in aircraft maintenance training.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has certified the FastFin® Tail Rotor Enhancement and Stability System for installation and flight on Bell 205 helicopters. Following up on the successful FastFin certification for Bell 212s, European operators can now realize the same performance improvements on Bell 205s. Hover load, wind azimuth tolerance, hover stability and safety are all now significantly enhanced with the BLR FastFin System.

By Gregory J. Reigel As you may know, the FAA publishes Advisory Circular 00-46 to provide guidance for taking advantage of the Aviation Safety Reporting Program (ASRP). Under the ASRP, if an individual holding a mechanic or other airman certificate files an ASRP form or “report” (also somewhat inappropriately referred to as the “NASA form” since NASA is only the administrator of the ASRP) within the time required, any sanction that may be imposed by the FAA in a subsequent enforcement action arising from the conduct identified in the ASRP report can be waived.

As I thought about how to write an article on technology obsolescence, and the possible tangents that it could take, I decided to focus on products that relate to computer-based or communications-based technologies. Otherwise, this would be a long article. In the interests of keeping this to a readable length, and making it sufficiently interesting, I have chosen to highlight 10 possible sets of products/mechanisms that will either not exist in their present form, or face dramatic change by the year 2020.

I started my career as a field service representative (FSR) at the age of 23 with Aerospatiale Helicopter Corporation. Now, at the age of 53, as I look back at having served with several OEMs in customer support and working both sides of the fence, I thought this might be a good subject matter. Let me start off by saying that these are my views and thoughts and not necessarily the views of other reps and OEMs — although having many friends in field service, I know some may share my thoughts.

By Joe Hertzler In our professions, we are continuously surrounded by maintenance records like manual revisions, bulletins and alerts, discrepancies and the paperwork required to return an aircraft to service.  The paper trail never ends. While safety the overall reason for all this paperwork, compliance is our goal.
