My editorial column in the Jan/Feb issue, “Actively Engaged,” got a lot of you talking. I received e-mails and phone calls from quite a few of you sharing your opinions of the proposed clarification of actively engaged by the FAA as it pertains to Inspection Authorization. It is good to see fellow A&Ps and IAs engaged in a spirited discussion of a subject that could adversely impact our industry. While I am on a roll, I might as well bring up another controversial subject — aviation lawsuits.

Joe, Your editorial column in the Jan/Feb issue was the first column I have read from you that I had an overwhelming feeling of disappointment. I’m in my 36th year of being actively engaged in aviation, and I agree with you fully about the “advanced certification” feeling I have for my IA. I am also one of the 83 individuals who have commented to the FAA on NPRM 2010-1060. My disappointment lies in the feeling that you have given up the fight already.

Hi Joe, I just finished reading the Jan/Feb issue of D.O.M. magazine. I was so impressed with Bill Brinkley’s article on Remembering Peter, I just had to write to you. What a well done and profound piece of journalism! Thanks to Bill for hitting the nail right on the head!

Greg, You may not remember me because you talk to a bunch of people, but I clearly remember talking with you and Joe at various times and places. I continue to be impressed by what you have done with this magazine.

I have had a lot of managers during the course of my career. Some were good, some bad and some mediocre.  I eventually figured out that there is as much — or more — to learn from a bad manager as there is from a good one.

Each March, Americans pause to celebrate “Women in History.” It is the perfect opportunity to seek unusual, sometimes remarkable stories about women in early aviation. From balloons to monoplanes and biplanes before WWI, many women were curious and inspired to fly. Others were drawn in to aviation through the love of a son, brother, or husband. Sisters

My last article, “The Red Queen,” led you into the Plan, Do, Check and Act (PDCA) cycle and discussed the planning portion. PDCA is a continuous improvement cycle that was popularized by W. Edwards Deming, the quality guru who went to Japan after WWII ... and the rest is a painful history lesson for America. Now for the rest of the story. The “DO” part

As I travel around the country meeting people and experiencing many different types of aviation operations, there is a common complaint I hear from employees. Employees complain regularly about their bosses, peers, or the company they work for. We have to ask ourselves; is this a legitimate, justified complaint?

When purchasing an exchange part, there some key factors that you need to be aware of during the transaction. Here are a few tips. First decide what condition you will accept, such as overhauled, serviceable, new surplus or as removed. When you can start looking for your unit, you need to ask these questions so you can make an informed decision: Who tagged the unit? What is the tag date? Is there a warranty? If so, what are the terms?

Though it may appear via the title of this article that I’m off and running to the topic of IA renewal process within the FAA discussed heavily the last three months, you guessed incorrectly. I’m going to focus on being engaged actively in our industry but not from just the perspective of the IA.
