If you catch a man a fish, he eats for a day. If you teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime. In the aviation world, your mechanic certificate might be your rod and reel but your hook won’t be swallowed without bait.

Dear Mr. Escobar,
I just finished reading your editorial (April 2015) regarding ‘Mentoring’. I’ve been receiving your magazine for a number of years and reading about all the successful personal cover stories of various DOMs. I would like to share what some of my personal experiences on mentoring have been over the past 30 years as an A&P/IA. I apologize for the length of this – it only covers the major highlights of my career.

Hi Gordon,
I am looking forward to reading your human error articles in D.O.M. magazine.
I have not heard of the Dirty Dozen in human error contributing factors, so I am going to spend some time researching them. (Google to the rescue.)
My career was mainly military aircraft maintenance (10 years Army, UH-60, AH-64, OH-58, UH-1H, OV-1D), then contract maintenance in Kuwait, Iraq for 5 years, 5 years at Mooney and now a sales manager at AmSafe. I am a school-trained avionics technician that earned my A&P the hard way, years and years of work.

I recently presented at WATS 2015 (World Airline Training Symposium Conference) for the fifth consecutive year. I enjoy hearing the challenges of others in our industry. My presentation on distractions struck a chord with so many attendees, and the feedback I received reinforced how often we allow mental distractions to infiltrate our thoughts. I thought I would expand on my presentation here.

In this month’s article, I would like to continue with the “inspection” theme that has developed during the last several issues and talk about owner-assisted annual inspections. Many shops allow an aircraft owner to assist with an annual inspection to help reduce the cost of the inspection for the owner. This also provides an opportunity for the owner to learn more about the aircraft — But how much help is the aircraft owner permitted to provide?

In the early 1960s, Ral Donner had a song called “You don’t know what you’ve got (until you lose it)”. I am aging myself when I can remember such things. They say the first thing to go is your memory, so it appears I am safe. This brings me to the point of this article and it’s not about 1960s Rock ‘n’ Roll — it’s about safety and quality.
